Last night at Soundclash I had the pleasure to tag with LDFD all night, it was a lot of fun. For those of you that didn’t make it out we kept it pretty chill most of the night. It seems lately that there has been a lot of talk dubstep being some fist pumping brostep. But there is a whole other side to it, just because you searched dubstep on youtube and found some clip of some crazy wobble action doesn’t mean the whole genre. It’s kinda hard to not notice the major moves that 2562 has been making over the last few years. Dave Huismans, better known by his stage name as 2562, is a musician from The Hague, Netherlands. Having previously released records of various musical styles under the monikers A Made Up Sound and Dogdaze, Huismans created 2562, under which his output is generally described as dubstep.

On April 19th, he did an interview and Resident Advisor which you can check out here. He also did a mix which you can download here. I was jamming this all day yesterday, I highly suggest you download it the tracklist is sick.

R.I.P. GURU YOU WILL BE MISSED

Well this is a sad day for hip hop, last night one of my favorite rappers Guru passed away. The 43-year-old rapper, whose real name is Keith Elam, had been suffering from cancer for over a year. The report quoted a statement from Guru’s camp that inferred the cause was complications from cancer.

Guru you will be missed, here are some of my favorite tunes from him for those of you that are not familiar with his music.

For those of you that are not into house music, Brett Johnson is a local DJ/Producer that produces some of Dallas’ finest house music. His musical journey started in the late 80′s when Brett and friends were heavily into the Rap and Hip House and began mixing records and experimenting with what has now been coined as “turntable-ism”. In high school, Brett would be introduced to a new crowd and another style: techno. From this point, Brett’s love for all things electronic grew into a deep respect and passion and he found himself growing with what was the beginning Dallas House scene. Brett’s name was growing within the Dallas scene, but it wasn’t until a move to Austin that his ideas and motivation really took shape. In ’95 a friend gave Brett a drum machine and he knew it was just a logical progression to start making music. While saving money and buying gear, Brett continued to build the DJ aspect of his career, but he was consumed with writing music. Over the next four years Brett studied music, absorbed information and learned all he could about the equipment.

Since then Brett has toured all over the world, produced/remixed more tracks than I can list in this blog post (but you can check it out here), and even started a record label. Brett still continues to produce and tour; taking his sound to the next level and promoting Dallas.

All I can say is wow. Scuba, is by far one of the most influentual people in dubstep these days. His label Horflush Recordings, has helped put out tunes from artist like Benga, Shackleton and Joy Orbison. His Resident Advisor Mix is half dubstep and the other techno, done by his alter ego SCB.
